Originally published in 1994 in Foot and Ankle International, the American Orthopaedic Foot and Ankle Society (AOFAS) Lesser Toe Metatarsophalangeal-Interphalangeal Rating System is a standardized evaluation of the clinical status of the metatarsals 2-5 and their associated phalanges.
It incorporates both subjective and objective information. Patients report their pain, and physicians assess alignment. The patient and physician work together to complete the functional portion. Scores range from 0 to 100, with a healthy lesser metatarsal and associated phalange receiving 100 points.
This score may be used to assess metatarsals 2-5, MTP joints 2-5, proximal, middle, and distal phalanges 2-5, proximal interphalangeal joints 2-5, and distal interphalangeal joints 2-5, and may be useful for hammertoe, mallet toe, clawtoe, bunionette, varus or valgus toe disorders, MTP arthrosis, osteonecrosis, cheilectomy, MTP implant arthroplasty, MTP resection arthroplasty, MTP instability or dislocation, IP instability or dislocation, and intra-articular or extra-articular fractures of the metatarsal and phalanx.
